Wait Up For Me Guys!!!!!

Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
Hey All!! I just started month 11 in country. Can you believe that???? All of your comments and tremendous support is what helps to keep me going during my service in Nicaragua. I have so much to tell all of you about and the Internet connection here last month has been horrible (even by Nica standards) so I have had no chance to upload photos. June was my best month so far here in country, for every reason, mainly because of the human relationships that are taking place. I´ll update you all shortly.

Apart from that, I´d like to share an article with you all that was sent out from the Peace Corps world director and was forwarded on to me by my supervisor. I´m so proud to be a part of an organization that values diversity and makes an effort to include those that are marginalized in society, realizing that there are many unique faces that make up America which also happen to connect us all as human beings through universal struggles and strengths.

June 1, 2007

TO: All Peace Corps

FROM: Ron Tschetter, Director

SUBJECT: Gay and Lesbian Pride Month

The Peace Corps has a long history of celebrating the strength that arises from its diversity. In the spirit of this tradition, I am pleased to recognize June 2007 as Gay and Lesbian Pride Month at the Peace Corps.

This national observance began in 1999 to honor Gay and Lesbian Americans who have enriched our national life. This year our tribute recognizes the spectrum of accomplishments Gay and Lesbian members of the Peace Corps family have made to our agency, our nation, and our world. During this month, I encourage you to explore the many ways in which we can contribute to a workforce and a society that is more inclusive, appreciative, and committed to unity.

We also honor the Gay and Lesbian Americans who have served and are currently serving as Peace Corps Volunteers. Throughout the history of the Peace Corps, Gay and Lesbian Volunteers have served in all sectors and in every region. These men and women have made differences in their host communities by sharing skills, building relationships, and serving as reminders of the determination, generosity, and good will of the American people.

Gay and Lesbian Pride Month is a time to affirm basic human and employee rights and our responsibility to ensure that the principle of equality endures. We will continue to ensure that all employees and Volunteers are treated with the utmost respect and understanding as we work together to achieve the mission of the Peace Corps around the world.

This was sent out to us from the Nica PC security director. Always watching out for us!!......................

July month of Sandinistas partying, during this month in every Nicaraguan department a celebration takes place, in reminiscence of their liberation.

These activities start on July 15th and finishes on the 19th day of the Sandinista Revolution, where the most important gathering takes place in Managua, on this day or the day before caravans of vehicles rally from all over the country.

Be advised that this year celebrations will NOT be as in early years (al suave), with Sandinistas running the government, they will sure become more expressives.

PCVs or Trainees are not allowed to go near, participate in parties or gatherings related to these celebrations.

Please maintain a low profile in your assigned sites.
  • Happy July 4th!

I know the Nics are not celebrating our independence day, but I thought I would wish you a happy 4th.

It is wonderful that the Peace Corps recognizes the diverse population that makes up the Peace Corps. Kudos to them!!

I cannot believe that you have been in Nicaragua for 11 months!! Time has really gone by so quickly. Take care Erik, Love and miss you, Mom

I guess there will be no partying for you or any other PCVs in July. As a mom I am sure glad that the Peace Corps is looking out for the safety of their volunteers.
